Playlists #153 & #154 & #155
And…we’re back? Its been a while since I posted one of these, despite creating the playlists every week and even writing them up. Sometimes the general malaise of the international pandemic gets to you, ya know? Lately I’ve been hopeful since as a society we seem to be turning some corners. But also kind feeling the vaccination FOMO. Anecdotally, it seems like I’m kind of the only person who I know who hasn’t got shots yet. And while I am happy for my friends and family, of course I want it to be my turn too. Whatever right. Anyways, hope you got your shot and am excited to go dumb when the beat drops with all of you soon.
Plugs 2 is out (LOL timely right), and Thanksgiving was the first single. Entirely produced by Harry Fraud, Benny gets back to his Buffalo cocaine rap roots for this one.
"That was us on the corner Montana & Genesee
when they couldn't sell it they self, they was hittin’ me
I was one call away, I pull up with the drugs with me
And you don't know the pressure of owing a plug 50"
wooooooooooooo!! *Rick Flair voice*
Love this Snoop Dogg song, and this might be Kokane's best ever feature.
Following the Long Beach veteran are two tracks from the younger LA set. Blxst, Drakeo, and G Perico all have distinct styles, are making exciting & creative music, and are forming a great bedrock for the scene to keep expanding. "Welcome to the Land" indeed!
Snoop is back again on Playlist #154 with a new single. 30 years rapping and still releasing hot tracks. And his chain game is on point in the video!
I continue to enjoy Mistah FAB's hyphy album Trippy Drippy. He keeps it Rich & Rude on this one. One of the (many) things Stan Pablo excels at is shit talking. This guy will send you running with your tail between your legs if you try to check him.
This song and video for Long Legged Larry from Aesop Rock is hilarious and executed exceptionally. The little details, like when Larry yells out "Jordan" during one of his leaps, are what sets art like this apart. Great job Aes.
Boldy James features on this new one from Santana Fox, who it turns out is Prodigy's daughter. Holding her own here trading bars with the deep voiced Detroit MC over an ALC beat.
This 2 Chainz verse is an early stand out feature from The Plugs I Met 2. He forgets your birthday, crashes his car and orders drugs via sign language on video call.
That’s not to discount what Benny does here either, as his verse is top tier as well. Never one to be out matched, Benny drops lines about re-upping right after a raid and the contents of his refrigerator (hint: butter).
Playlist #155 starts with Vinnie Paz who is one of these rappers who I have never really gotten into but that is my own mistake. I've been hearing more and more of him lately and its all excellent. Gully NYC shit with dense rhymes? Yes, please!
A couple blogs ago I mentioned that Flee Lord should be next in line for a DJ Muggs tape considering the line-up that had proceeded was a lot of artists around the same scene (Eto, CRIMEAPPLE, Meyhem Lauren). Well its here and does not disappoint. Flee's relentless work ethic hasn't diminished the quality of his music, and its cool to see him get rewarded with a level up like this.
I'm fucking heavy with Cartel Madras, who I was unfamiliar with until two weeks ago. Not much to say besides turn up to this shit. The Indian-Canadian sisters have dubbed the sound "Goonda Rap" and you should get aquainted. This is the type of show I cannot wait to get back to.
Wrapping up #155 is older track from Elcamino and Conway. Sometimes you just need to hear some rapping and a Bishop from Juice sample
So damn! A three-fer. Appreciate everyone’s patience with these, and hope to keep sharing great music with whoever needs it.
