Playlists #164 #165 & #166
Hey. Its been awhile. Didn’t mean to leave you, without dope playlists to step to. Got fully vaxed and then started doing shit and, lol, didn’t post a blog for a couple weeks! Normal shit, actually, if you think about it. But the playlists were being built week after week, just like they always have been (and always will be?!?!?!? who knows).
Playlist #164 starts off with a track from the posthumous DMX album. “Hood Blues” features the Griselda guys and stands out as a favorite for me. Gary Suarez wrote recently about legacy acts having a Westside/Benny/Conway feature being a great way to help bridge generations and I fully dig that idea.
Steve Earle, The Congos, and The Meters all soundtracked our Memorial Day grilling, and get featured here. Those are followed by some of the music that accompanied a recent trip down to Santa Cruz. Jammed to The Greasy Gills and their surf rock while spending an afternoon on the beach, and was bumping Juicy J’s seminal mixtape Blue Dream and Lean in the home of the famous strain.
Playlist #165 comes up next and starts with the CRIMEAPPLE/Ghostface/Jim Jones track off the new Peter Rosenberg album. Peter cashes in some chips to get stars from three eras together all on the same song.
Real Late is a modern update on the radio DJ mixtape pioneered by guys like Tony Touch, who got Mos Def and De La Soul to team up on his 2000 classic The Piecemaker.
The latest Vinnie Paz continues to impress, “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” is another standout.
Finally we got an Erykah Badu song cuz why not! Shits excellent.
And finally we get to this week’s playlist, #166. Meg is back with “Thot Shit” and goddam she does not miss, ever. Another banger from the young legend.
The urgency in Yelohill’s voice is what stands out the most to me. Its palpable on the song “Tear$”, creating a frantic atmosphere for the gang bang lyrics.
Your Old Droog released another album (4th in six months-ish) and it includes “Please Listen to My Jew Tape”. This was a loosey back in the winter that I loved, glad it made it onto an album release.
Finally we mellow down with “Hope You’re Doing Better” from MNDSGN. The LA producer’s new album is rich and relaxing.
So that’s it I guess. Enjoy the music and the weekend, and we’ll be back with more tunes for your little ears.
